Sedum pachyphyllum (commonly called Jelly Bean Plant or Silver Jelly Beans) is a charming, low-maintenance succulent native to Mexico. It is highly valued for its plump, finger-like, blue-green leaves that develop cheerful red or pink tips when exposed to bright sunlight and cool temperatures.
Key Plant Characteristics
Appearance: Fleshy, club-shaped leaves grow on trailing woody stems that can reach up to 12 inches (30 cm) in height.
Flowers: Produces clusters of cheerful, star-shaped yellow flowers during the summer.
Hardiness: Drought-tolerant and winter-hardy down to roughly 15°F to 20°F (-6.7°C to -9°C).
Optimal Growing Conditions
To keep your Sedum pachyphyllum thriving, replicate its natural, arid habitat by focusing on these core needs:
Sunlight: Requires plenty of bright, indirect light to full sun. At least 6 hours of daily sunlight bring out the plant's signature red leaf tips.
Soil: Must be planted in porous, highly draining soil. A standard cactus or succulent potting mix works best.
Watering: Follow the "soak and dry" method. Water the soil deeply until it drains out the bottom, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again.
