Sedum Clavatum, a perennial Sedum succulent, is prized for its rod - shaped leaves and spreading growth, ideal for ground cover and hanging pots.

Sedum Clavatum Plant Characteristics

Leaves: Cylindrical, 1 - 2 cm long, 0.3 cm wide, smooth and fleshy. Grayish-green normally, tips turn red under sunlight. Low light causes elongation and color fading.

Growth Form: Low - creeping with 20 - 30 cm stems, forming dense mats or cascades. Old stems lignify, new growth stays green.

Flowers: Summer-blooming, star-shaped white/light pink flowers with yellow stamens cluster at stem tips.

Sedum Clavatum Growth Habits

Thrives in warm, dry, sunny spots with good air flow. Drought - tough, hates waterlogging.

Temperature: Grows best at 15 - 28°C, needs shade above 30°C, survives short - term - 5°C but keep above 0°C long - term.

Light: Tolerates full or partial sun. More light means compact growth; less causes stretching.

Soil & Water: Well - drained soil with 30 - 50% grit suffices. Water when dry, once a week in summer, monthly in winter for pots.

    • Adequate Sunlight: Succulents prefer bright, indirect light. Most species require 8-10 hours of sunlight daily.
    • Avoid Direct Sunburn: Provide shade during hot summer days to prevent leaf burn.

  • 2. Watering Methods:

    • Moderate Watering: Water only when the soil is completely dry. Overwatering is the main cause of root rot.
    • Proper Watering Technique: Use the “soak and dry” method—water thoroughly and let excess water drain from the bottom of the pot.
    • Seasonal Adjustments: Increase watering frequency during the growing seasons (spring and autumn) and reduce it during dormancy (summer or winter, depending on the species).

  • 3. Soil and Pots:

    • Well-Draining Soil: Use specialized succulent soil or mix sandy soil components like peat moss, perlite, and gritty soil to ensure good drainage.
    • Pots with Drainage Holes: Choose pots with drainage holes. Terracotta pots are ideal due to their breathability, which helps with moisture evaporation.

  • 4. Temperature and Humidity:

    • Optimal Temperature: The best growing temperature for succulents is between 15-25°C (60-77°F).
    • Cold Protection: Most succulents are not frost-tolerant. Move them indoors if temperatures drop below 5°C (41°F).
    • Low Humidity Environment: Succulents prefer dry environments, so avoid placing them in humid areas like bathrooms.
